Frequently Asked Questions
What is dragon boat racing?
Dragon boating is a high-energy team water sport rooted in ancient Chinese tradition. A standard boat features 20 paddlers moving in perfect synchronization, guided by the rhythmic beat of a drummer at the bow and the steady hand of a steerer at the stern.
What is a novice team?
A novice team is typically composed of paddlers with little to no prior racing experience. These teams often join for the community aspect, local team building, or simply to experience the thrill of the festival for the first time.
Who can participate?
Almost anyone can join the race! We have multiple divisions including corporate teams, community groups, youth programs, and competitive clubs. Minimum age requirements usually apply (often 12 and older), but no prior experience is required for our novice divisions.
Can I join if I don’t have a team?
Yes! While most paddlers join as part of a pre-formed group, we maintain a "free agent" list to connect individuals with teams that have open seats. It's a fantastic way to meet new people and become part of the dragon boat community.
How do teams prepare or practice?
Registered teams are offered structured practice sessions at Lake Merced in the weeks before the festival. Professional coaches provide guidance on paddling technique, timing, and race-day logistics to ensure everyone is ready for the water.
What should I expect on race day?
Expect high energy and a vibrant atmosphere! There will be multiple heat races throughout the day, cultural performances, local food vendors, and a bustling athlete village. It is a day of intense competition paired with community celebration.
Is the event open to the public?
Absolutely. Spectating is free and we highly encourage the San Francisco community to come down, cheer on the paddlers, and enjoy the festivities. It is a family-friendly event with plenty of entertainment on land and water.
What should teams bring?
We recommend bringing water, sunscreen, comfortable athletic wear (dry-fit fabrics are best), and a change of dry clothes. All necessary racing equipment, including paddles and flotation devices, will be provided at the site.
Can team registration fees be tax-deductible?
Often, yes. As the festival is organized by non-profit entities dedicated to cultural and youth development, registration fees may qualify as tax-deductible contributions. We advise consulting with a tax professional to confirm details for your specific group.
